Sonoma County Wine Celebration Delivers $1 Million Boost for Children’s Literacy Programs

Over the past weekend, the Sonoma County Wine Celebration successfully raised nearly $1 million for local charities, primarily focused on children’s literacy. Although this year’s total marked a decrease from last year’s $1.6 million, it was expected due to the reduction of live auction lots, which were halved to streamline the event.

Since its inception in 1988, the auction has accumulated over $44 million for various nonprofits addressing education, health services, arts, culture, and environmental issues in Sonoma County. The three-day event, hosted by the Sonoma County Vintners Foundation, culminated in a lively live auction on September 20, held at Cline Cellars, where more than 200 guests gathered.

The atmosphere on the sunny day was festive, complete with sparkling wine and gourmet bites such as caviar and duck confit tostadas. Guests mingled under the shade of trees while tasting wines from various vintners.

John Curley, the auctioneer, energized the crowd as he encouraged bidding on 22 exciting lots. Guests enjoyed a delightful menu featuring grilled shrimp and Ibérico pork tenderloin while, of course, sipping on Sonoma County wines.

Among the auction highlights, Lot #21—offering VIP access for eight to next year’s celebration—sold for $25,000. Lot #13 featured a unique lunch for 12 with prominent women winemakers, which fetched $22,000 along with a case of wine from each featured vintner. Another remarkable lot was the Ultimate Knights Valley Experience, which initially sold for $14,500 and was then doubled to $29,000 when sponsors agreed to create another package for the runner-up.

The most significant raise came from the Fund-a-Need lot, which collected a staggering $590,000, thanks to generous bids of up to $50,000. Congressman Mike Thompson addressed attendees, emphasizing the importance of community support in furthering educational opportunities for children.

Curley shared a heartfelt personal story about his struggles with dyslexia and contributed $1,000 to the cause, reinforcing the significance of supporting literacy programs in the region.
