The Urban Grape: South End Wine Shop Closes Its Doors After Failed Loan Negotiations

Chris Lehoux, October 10, 2025

An acclaimed wine and spirits shop in Boston’s South End, The Urban Grape, has announced its closure effective immediately following a default on loans. The store’s owners, TJ and Hadley Douglas, posted on social media that they couldn’t negotiate an agreement with their lender, Cambridge Savings Bank, related to their Small Business Administration loan.

After having operated on Columbus Avenue since 2012, the couple had worked diligently with family and investors to continue the business, which emphasized community engagement through wine. However, following deteriorating negotiations, a court granted the bank preliminary control over the shop’s assets after the couple defaulted on a $2 million loan issued just this past year.

Cambridge Savings Bank stated their obligation to uphold federal guidelines which protect the bank’s overall financial health. The Urban Grape had been recognized locally and nationally, even winning a 2021 Small Business of the Year award largely because of its unique position within the wine industry—a demographic often lacking diversity.

Originally, The Urban Grape also boasted an ambitious plan for expansion, having recently opened a location in Washington, D.C., supported by the same $2 million loan. Yet, financial troubles surfaced as the store failed to meet several loan payments since February, leading to the closure of both locations.

Despite the setback, the owners expressed hope for the future, promising their customer base that they would gather again around their communal tasting table, hinting at plans for a possible reopening.
