Chill Your Wine in Minutes: The Ultimate Hack for Fast Cooling!

Chris Lehoux, November 30, 2025

If you’ve ever found yourself in the awkward position of needing to chill a bottle of white wine or rosé just before serving, there’s no need to panic—or to dilute your drink with ice cubes. There’s a quick and effective hack you can use that involves a surprising ingredient: salt.

Molly Horn, a chief mixologist and spirits educator at Total Wine & More, suggests filling a large container with ice and water and then adding salt. This simple combination can chill your wine in as little as five minutes, significantly faster than the usual 15 to 20 minutes it would normally take in ice water alone.

Horn explains the science behind this method: adding salt lowers the freezing point of water, which accelerates the chilling process. She likens it to making ice cream as a child, where salt mixed with ice speeds up the combination’s effectiveness. For the best results, keep the bottle moving in this icy mixture to enhance the cooling effects.

Using an insulated container or a metal bucket also contributes to quicker chilling. Feel free to add a cup or two of salt, depending on the size of your container, as more salt leads to faster results.

When employing this method, keep in mind not to overcrowd your container with too many bottles or ice. Ideally, the wine bottles should be submerged in the salty ice water for optimal cooling. However, be cautious with the labels, as salt water can peel or damage paper labels. If preserving the label is a priority, you can wrap a wet paper towel around the neck of the bottle and place it in the freezer, although this method takes around 30 minutes.

This salt hack isn’t just limited to wine; it works well for beers and other beverages too. Just remember that different drinks require varied serving temperatures, so adjust your chilling times accordingly.
