Masters of Wine Open Their Cellars: A Rare Opportunity at Sotheby’s Auction

Chris Lehoux, December 3, 2025

The iconic auction house Sotheby’s is hosting an unprecedented online event from December 1–15, 2025, featuring rare wines sourced from the personal cellars of the esteemed Masters of Wine (MW). This group comprises just 418 experts globally, recognized for the highest level of viticulture, winemaking, and wine business knowledge.

For the first time, these Masters are sharing exclusive lots that offer unparalleled access to their curated selections, which includes not only ultra-rare bottles but also unique experiences. Sarah Harrison, executive director of the Institute of Masters of Wine, emphasized the cultural significance of wine and its ability to connect people, traditions, and innovations.

Notable auction items include exceptional wine bottles, such as a 12-liter Balthazar of Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux 2015, a limited edition, and exclusive tours highlighting the expertise behind prestigious wines. For instance, collectors can bid for a dinner with acclaimed wine writer Jancis Robinson MW or partake in tours through renowned wine regions like South Africa and Napa Valley.

In addition to rare wines, auction proceeds will support scholarships and bursaries for the Master of Wine study program, which is vital for cultivating new talent in the field. The auction aims to enrich the Master of Wine community through educational initiatives that promote mentorship and continue the development of current members.

The auction includes lots from iconic regions globally, showcasing both celebrated estates and emerging wine areas. Participating in this auction allows collectors not only to acquire rare bottles but also to engage directly with the community shaping the future of fine wine.
