Ted Conklin: Remembering the Restaurateur Who Transformed Long Island’s East End at 77

Theodore “Ted” Conklin III, the owner and sommelier of the renowned American Hotel in Sag Harbor, N.Y., passed away on February 1 at the age of 77 due to complications from bladder cancer. Conklin played a pivotal role in revitalizing Sag Harbor and left a significant mark on American wine culture.

Conklin’s journey began in New York City in 1948, where he was born the son of a prominent brass and copper manufacturer. He attended Babson College, where his innovative spirit led him to create a restaurant while still in school. This venture provided him early insights into hospitality and business management.

In 1972, Conklin discovered the dilapidated American Hotel in Sag Harbor. Despite the town’s downturn, he saw potential and undertook extensive renovations to reopen the hotel on July 4 of that year. His approach emphasized exceptional hospitality and a burgeoning wine list, quickly attracting a diverse clientele, including celebrities and literary figures.

Conklin’s early focus on Bordeaux wines set the foundation for a prestigious wine cellar, which eventually expanded to include an array of prestigious Burgundy and German Riesling selections. His collaboration with Michael Skurnik, a prominent NY wine importer, enhanced the wine offerings at the American Hotel, which garnered a Grand Award from Wine Spectator in 1981—a designation it has maintained for nearly five decades.

Throughout his life, Conklin was known for his vibrant personality and eclectic fashion sense. He consistently greeted guests in a range of striking outfits, from formal black tie to colorful and whimsical garments.

Conklin’s legacy lives on through his contributions to the hospitality industry and his ability to create a welcoming atmosphere in Sag Harbor. He is survived by his wife, Susan Franklin, and their children, among other family members. His influence on the wine community and the East End will be felt for many years to come.
