Beyond the Bottle: Exploring the Offerings of Downtown Lafayette’s Premier Wine Shop

When Wild Child Wines first opened in downtown Lafayette just before the COVID-19 shutdown, it was a modest 600-square-foot wine shop. Six years later, the business has evolved significantly, focusing not only on wine but also on food to enhance the overall experience. Owners Katie and Denny Culbert shared insights about their journey on the Discover Lafayette podcast.

During the pandemic lockdown, Katie explored pizza recipes, which inspired her to host backyard pizza parties. This idea eventually transitioned to the wine shop as a way to attract more customers. As Katie noted, "The barrier to entry for pizza is much lower than this new wine that they haven’t seen. Everything that we’ve added is just to get more people in the door to sell more wine. That’s the goal.”

Today, Wild Child, located at 210 E. Vermilion St., hosts a popular Friday lunch featuring house-made bread and an array of sandwiches, salads, and small plates, emphasizing local ingredients. Denny highlighted that this approach reflects their wine philosophy: "It goes back to the wine. Ingredients matter, and good inputs create good outcomes."
