‘It Changed Everything’: How North Coast Wine Challenge Winners Attribute Success to Past Recognition

Chris Lehoux, March 17, 2026

For Gary and Ellen Luchtel, the owners of Fortunati Vineyards, winning a prestigious award at the North Coast Wine Challenge was nothing short of transformative. Their 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon triumphed over more than 1,100 entries to clinch the title of "Best of the Best." Located in Napa Valley, Fortunati Vineyard produces under 3,000 cases of wine annually and operates by appointment only—a model that makes their success even more remarkable.

Following their win, the couple found themselves limiting the amount of wine customers could purchase, as demand surged. Ellen Luchtel noted, “As a small boutique winery, that really moved the needle for us.” Their recognition spurred increased tasting room traffic, especially among locals excited to share their story.

The North Coast Wine Challenge, now in its 14th year, will return on April 7-8, where a panel of about 30 judges will taste and evaluate over 1,000 wines from the North Coast region, encompassing Sonoma, Napa, Mendocino, Lake, Marin, and Solano counties. Chief judge Daryl Groom emphasizes the importance of local expertise in judging, highlighting the high caliber of wine judging in the community.

The challenge continues to grow in popularity, with a record of 1,147 entries last year—an impressive 43% increase since its inception in 2012. Many wineries recognize the exposure and opportunities the competition affords, despite ongoing challenges in the industry.

Lise Asimont of Dot Wine experienced this firsthand when she was named the inaugural "Winemaker of the Year" at the competition in 2025. This accolade “changed everything” for Dot Wine, leading to a remarkable 50% increase in sales and growth in wine club memberships.

Steve Sangiacomo of Sangiacomo Family Wine also reflects on the significant impact of winning at the challenge. Their Sonoma Coast Chardonnay, crowned the top wine in 2020, helped establish their fledgling label in a crowded market.

Ultimately, the North Coast Wine Challenge serves as a platform for local wines, elevating niche producers and helping them gain the recognition they deserve among peers and consumers alike.
