The Art of Winemaking: Insights from Gary Farrell Winery’s Head Winemaker

“After I finished my first Pinot Noir, Gary told me, ‘You did exactly what I would have,’” he recalls, emphasizing his belief in maintaining consistency while also striving for improvement.

This philosophy is reflected in the subtle enhancements made to the 2023 vintage, including adjusted barrel toasts for increased texture and pump-overs for better fruit extraction prior to fermentation. Overall, McKoy continues on the reliable path established by Gary Farrell since 1982, ensuring the wines stand out in a market saturated with high-alcohol and excessively oaked options.

Recently, McKoy shared insights about his 21-year journey with the winery. He is a hands-on winemaker who enjoys the most significant part of his role: transforming grapes from long-term vineyard contracts into balanced, fruit-driven wines. The primary source of grapes, Rochioli Vineyard, has been a staple since the winery’s inception. Other acclaimed sites, such as Ritchie, Hallberg, Durell, and Bacigalupi, also contribute to the high-quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that McKoy produces.
