The Rise of Non-Alcoholic Wine: Why It’s Thriving as Traditional Wine Sales Decline

Chris Lehoux, May 8, 2026

Non-alcoholic wine is witnessing a surge in popularity as traditional wine sales experience a decline. With younger consumers increasingly leaning toward moderation in their drinking habits, non-alcoholic wine has begun to solidify its place within wine culture, shedding its earlier status as a mere novelty.

A recent report from Silicon Valley Bank revealed that U.S. wine volume dropped to about 329 million cases in 2025, down from 335.9 million the previous year, indicating a shift in the wine market. Traditional sales fell by 2% in cases and 1.6% in value, raising the stakes for wine producers to seek alternative growth avenues, such as non-alcoholic options.

Non-alcoholic wine, typically created by removing most of the alcohol from regular wine, differentiates itself from grape juice, preserving ties to wine culture through fermentation. Its market definitions can be confusing, involving terms like alcohol-free and dealcoholized, but generally, non-alcoholic wine contains less than 0.5% alcohol by volume. Advances in production technologies and a growing acknowledgment of consumer needs are leading to improved quality and variety in non-alcoholic wines.

The non-alcoholic beverage segment posted impressive growth, with NielsenIQ reporting U.S. off-premise sales of non-alcoholic drinks reaching $925 million in 2025—a 22% increase year-on-year. This demonstrates that consumers are not simply abandoning alcoholic beverages; rather, they’re expanding their choices. Many now wish to enjoy social drinking occasions without the effects of alcohol.

Changing consumer attitudes are also evident among millennials and Gen Z, who account for a growing share of the wine-drinking audience. They frequently view wine not just as a staple beverage but as a drink for special occasions. Many of these younger drinkers are experimenting with their alcohol consumption, motivated by health reasons or a desire for moderation after the pandemic.

As these changes take root, the wine industry is challenged to cater to the evolving preferences of younger adults, especially in balancing social engagement with healthier lifestyles. Non-alcoholic wine emerges as a potential solution, enabling consumers to enjoy the social aspects of drinking wine without the full effects of alcohol.

While the non-alcoholic wine category faces hurdles, such as quality gaps—especially in still red wines—it is gradually gaining traction. Positive developments in flavor preservation and dealcoholization techniques are paving the way for improvement. Key retailers and producers see the potential for non-alcoholic wine to enhance gathering experiences across a spectrum of occasions.

As the category continues to evolve, the wine industry needs to adapt, acknowledging that non-alcoholic wine is not just a niche market but an essential component of future growth strategies. As technology and consumer choices advance, the trend points toward a future where both alcoholic and non-alcoholic wines coexist, catering to diverse preferences within the same social context.

Understanding this shift and responding swiftly will be critical for wine brands hoping to capitalize on the growing interest in non-alcoholic options. Thus, the real question for the industry is not whether this category deserves attention, but whether brands can act quickly enough to embrace this opportunity for growth.
