Japanese Wine: The Rising Star You Need to Discover

Japanese wine is enjoying a remarkable surge in popularity, with the number of wineries soaring from 238 in 2008 to 551 by 2025, marking a 2.3-fold increase. This growth is not only measured by the quantity of producers but also their increasing recognition at international wine competitions such as the Decanter World Wine Awards and the International Wine Challenge.

Despite the challenges posed by Japan’s hot, humid climate, which includes heavy rainfall and typhoons, winemakers employ innovative techniques, such as individually bagging grapes to protect them from the elements. Over the years, the focus has shifted from mimicking French wines to cultivating a unique Japanese identity, with distinct varieties while utilizing both foreign and native grapes like Koshu and Muscat Bailey A.

In 2023, regulatory changes eliminated minimum land requirements for wineries, fostering a diverse landscape of wine production across all but one of Japan’s prefectures. This includes rural estates, urban micro-wineries, and even rooftop vineyards in Tokyo. Currently, five regions have gained Geographical Indication (GI) status, protecting their wine heritage.

While Japanese wine consumption at home is on the rise—growing by 27% from 2006 to 2023—exports remain modest, constituting only 1.4% of total Japanese alcohol exports. Nick Rowan, a wine specialist and author of Japanese Wine, believes that although the market may not see blockbuster wines, Japanese wine will continue to thrive as a niche, quality-driven industry. He draws a parallel between the early days of Japanese wine’s development and the classic rock band, The Rolling Stones, suggesting that those experiencing Japanese wine today are witnessing its formative stages, akin to attending early gigs of future legends.

As younger generations embrace and innovate within the industry, the future looks bright for Japanese wine, establishing its distinct place in the global market while remaining deeply rooted in individual growers and their stories.
