Ongoing Pressure on Italy’s Wine Exports: Challenges and Perspectives

Italy’s wine industry is currently facing significant challenges in its export markets, particularly to major countries such as the UK and Germany, where sales have dropped by over 6%. According to the national statistics agency, ISTAT, wine exports for the first four months of the year fell 6.8% year-on-year, totaling €2.34 billion ($2.66 billion) while the volume decreased by 3.7% to 641 million liters.

Lamberto Frescobaldi, president of the trade association Unione Italiana Vini (UIV), commented that the recent results highlight the struggles within the wine sector, which is contracting globally. He emphasized the need for Italian wine to enhance its presence in emerging markets and reduce production to navigate the current landscape effectively.

While overall sales have faced declines, there are some positive indicators, notably a 1.6% sales increase in the US for April. However, the cumulative sales for the first four months show a significant downturn of over 15%. Sales to the UK and Germany have also seen declines of more than 6%, while Canadian sales remained stable and Swiss sales decreased by over 12%.

On a brighter note, exports to Brazil and China have surged by 17.8% and 9.7%, respectively. Frescobaldi stressed the importance of promoting Italian wine while managing supply and demand to sustain the industry’s value and protect producer incomes.

In response to the ongoing market pressures, UIV has introduced measures to regulate production, including suspending new planting permits and reducing production yields. These steps aim to address inventory issues that have arisen recently, despite production levels being relatively stable at approximately 44.4 million hectoliters.

As of 2025, Italy has maintained its position as the world’s leading wine-producing nation, with the fourth-largest vineyard area, covering 726,000 hectares. However, domestic consumption has also declined considerably, dropping 9.4% in the previous year.

These developments underscore the complexities and difficulties within Italy’s wine export sector, highlighting the need for strategic changes to adapt to an evolving global market.
