Rick Steves’ Essential Tips for Safely Transporting Your Wine Souvenirs Home

After a wonderful vacation, bringing home souvenirs can turn into a challenge, especially when it comes to wine. Travel expert Rick Steves emphasizes that cultural souvenirs are among the best items to bring back from Europe. However, transporting wine presents its own set of difficulties due to luggage constraints, liquid restrictions, and the risk of breakage.

Steves offers practical advice for wine lovers wishing to bring their favorite bottles back home. He suggests, "Pack softly and carry a hard suitcase." When purchasing wine outside of duty-free shops, it must be placed in checked luggage. For safety, a sturdy suitcase is ideal to withstand the rigors of travel. Wine from airport duty-free can be kept in carry-on luggage inside a secure, tamper-evident bag. To protect the bottles during travel, using wine sleeves or wrapping them in clothing is recommended. Steves also highlights the importance of insulating the bottles since they will be subjected to extreme temperatures in the cargo hold, which could affect the wine’s quality.

For those traveling with a partner, Steves advises splitting the bottles between bags to distribute weight. Since each bottle weighs around three pounds, this not only helps manage baggage weight but also prevents incurring excess baggage fees. If a solo traveler knows they’ll exceed weight limits, pre-paying for overweight baggage can be more economical than paying fees at the airport.

Steves also notes that travelers can bring back up to three standard bottles (about 2¼ liters) tax-free if traveling as a couple. In contrast, solo travelers are allowed only one liter without incurring customs duties, and some countries have steep duties on alcohol over that limit. If over the limit, he suggests being honest with customs agents as they may be lenient if the wine is for personal use, which could also expedite the customs process.
