A medical emergency led Mark Danford to delay the opening of his new venture, The Wine Warehouse, in Willoughby. After undergoing surgery and spending 30 days in the hospital, he emerged with renewed health and a fresh perspective. At 56, he has embraced a healthier lifestyle, which includes quitting smoking and focusing on better eating and exercise habits.

Danford, a certified sommelier since 2015, was able to create a welcoming space for wine enthusiasts at 37812 Vine St., just three blocks from Route 20. The Wine Warehouse features over 300 wine vintages, all at state-minimum prices, encouraging local customers to explore their wine preferences alongside a menu of charcuterie and cheese platters. Patrons can also enjoy cocktails made from a selection of 40 bourbons and rye whiskies.

Despite working alone until next year due to licensing regulations, Danford is making the most of his small space, which only accommodates 10 seats at the bar and four additional tables. He has opted not to hold a grand opening, preferring to manage customer volume himself.

Born and raised in Willoughby, Danford has a rich history in the hospitality industry, having previously owned several venues in the area. His passion for wine, particularly Italian varieties, shines through as he aims to expand his selection to 1,000 wines by 2028. His current favorite is Soave, a dry white wine he recommends for its versatility with seafood and pasta.
