Vinitaly.USA Debuts in New York, Bringing Italian Wine to 50 Million U.S. Consumers Chris Lehoux, October 27, 2026 Vinitaly.USA opened in New York City on October 26, bringing together 300 exhibitors and 2,500 Italian wine labels at Pier 36. Organized by Veronafiere with the Italian Trade Agency, the two-day event is intended to help Italian producers expand their reach in the U.S. market. The United States already has 35 million consumers of Italian wine, according to the UIV-Vinitaly Observatory. But with nearly 90 million regular wine drinkers nationwide, the industry sees more than 50 million people as potential customers. Reaching them will require a better understanding of differences in age, ethnicity and regional demand. Research presented for the event suggests Italian wine may have an advantage with younger drinkers. California wine sales are concentrated among older consumers, with people over 55 accounting for more than 70% of volume. Italian wine, by contrast, has a more even distribution across age groups. Consumption habits are changing, too. Although wine is most often enjoyed on its own or with a meal, newer preferences include wine cocktails, wine served over ice and wine mixed with nonalcoholic drinks. A Wine Market Council survey found that 75% of regular wine consumers also drink wine in ways that depart from traditional habits. Family influences, restaurant and bar experiences, and social media all help shape those choices. Veronafiere General Manager Giovanni Sacripante said Italian wine’s regional diversity and traditions can appeal to new U.S. consumers. He described the challenge as adapting commercial strategies to changing demand—from fine dining to emerging ways of drinking—while preserving the sector’s identity. The event’s exhibitors are responding to two broad areas of interest: premium wines associated with fine dining and Italian lifestyle, and more versatile wines suited to new serving styles and occasions. The opening of Vinitaly.USA also coincided with the 13th wine2wine Vinitaly Business Forum. Its program includes more than 20 sessions on market trends, wine tourism, education and masterclasses. The event includes producers, regional and industry associations, and wine consortia from across Italy. The United States imported about $4.9 billion of wine from the European Union in 2025, making it a major opportunity for Italian producers. Italian officials and industry representatives at the opening emphasized cooperation between businesses and institutions, as well as the importance of promoting wine alongside Italian food, tourism and regional culture. Vinitaly.USA is the U.S. edition of the annual Vinitaly wine and spirits trade show held in Verona. Its program is designed to connect Italian producers with American importers, distributors, buyers and other trade professionals through meetings, tastings, seminars and educational events.
