Colorado Wine: Elevating to New Heights in Quality and Recognition

Chris Lehoux, August 22, 2025

Growing up in Colorado, I had a deep-rooted connection to the state, but it wasn’t until I moved to California that I discovered its long history as a wine-producing state, which began in the late 1960s when Dr. Gerald Ivancie introduced Vitis vinifera vines with the help of Warren Winiarski.

The Colorado wine industry has faced challenges, including damaging freezes and wildfires, yet it has persevered. Today, more than 140 wineries operate across over 750 acres of vineyards, placing Colorado’s wine production on a scale larger than France’s Savennières but smaller than Germany’s Ahr region.

Since 2016, I have served as a judge for the Colorado Wine Board’s annual Governor’s Cup competition, witnessing the growth and evolution of the state’s wine industry. The wines I recently tasted in late July represent the highest quality I’ve encountered from Colorado, showcasing significant improvements.

Cultivating at High Elevations

Colorado’s vineyards are cultivated at altitudes between 4,000 to 7,000 feet above sea level. The region’s combination of intense UV light, drastic temperature fluctuations, and unique climatic conditions creates a challenging environment for grape cultivation.

Charlotte Oliver, a plant pathologist with Colorado State University, notes, “Most people think that because of our elevation, we’re a cool climate, but the truth is we’re really a hot region, with cold-region problems.” Colorado shares similarities with eastern Washington but faces harsher winters, with potentially perilous temperature drops in fall capable of devastating crops.
