The Emperor’s New Rosé: Elevating Pink Wine to New Luxury Heights

Chris Lehoux, October 1, 2025

As rosé wines reach prices in the triple digits, the burgeoning luxury rosé sector raises an important question: does high-end rosé actually deliver quality, or is it merely a clever marketing gimmick?

The journey into this question began with a tasting of Matrona rosé, a delightful blend of Portuguese varietals, while soaking in the stunning view at H.O. Wines in the Douro Valley. Priced at about 45 euros in Portugal, it sparked a reflection on how rosé has transitioned from a casual summer drink to an option for serious wine enthusiasts willing to pay more.

The rising popularity of expensive rosé is evident, with bottles like Miraval’s Muse de Miraval commanding prices starting around $300, and Gérard Bertrand’s biodynamic Clos du Temple retailing at $195. This trend suggests that premium rosé is not just a fleeting market inclination, but rather is here to stay.

Historically, the luxury rosé category owes much to the success of rosé Champagnes in the late 1990s, emerging brands like Laurent-Perrier leading the way. This was followed by a keen interest from producers like Sacha Lichine, who has been behind the iconic Whispering Angel and invested in Château d’Esclans to showcase high-quality rosé.

However, the winemaking processes for luxury still rosé differ dramatically from those used for Champagne. The former often involves minimal skin contact rather than complex fermentation, leading to simpler winemaking practices when compared to the elaborate methods of Champagne production.

Interestingly, while the price of California rosé can exceed $30 without raising eyebrows, the idea of spending over $100 on a bottle from Provence seems more contentious and potentially ludicrous for some.

Italian producer Donnafugata’s collaboration with Dolce & Gabbana has produced a $57 rosé, illustrating how luxury branding has helped elevate rosé’s status. This premiumization reflects increased prices, but also a commitment to quality through focused vineyard practices.

Both producers and experts agree that younger consumers are driving the luxury rosé trend, appreciating craft and emotional connections with wines. Millennials, intrigued by storytelling and experience, are reshaping how rosé is perceived—not just as a casual beverage, but also as a legitimate contender in the fine wine category.

Despite these developments, the debate around aging potential persists. Some producers argue that high-end rosé, if made with careful attention, can age gracefully, yet skepticism remains about whether it warrants collectible status.

The producers recognize the hurdles of shifting perceptions. Engaging sommeliers to reintroduce rosé as a collectible wine worthy of fine dining is one approach to overcoming existing biases and elevating its image.

Ultimately, while the quality of luxury rosés improves, whether the price reflects their value remains subjective and can only be answered in personal moments—like enjoying a perfect bottle at sunset with friends, or sitting at a desk on an ordinary day and contemplating the price point anew.
