Royal Wine Merchant Makes Historic Arrival in America After 327 Years

Chris Lehoux, November 5, 2025

Berry Bros. & Rudd, the oldest fine wine and spirits merchant in Britain, has officially launched its first American store in Washington D.C. This launch marks a significant expansion for the long-established merchant, which holds a Royal Warrant from King Charles III. The location at 888 17th Street NW reflects a strategic choice, as the company believes D.C.’s demographics and cultural milieu align well with its luxury offerings.

While the U.S. wine market is experiencing some decline, Berry Bros. & Rudd is betting on a shift in consumer behavior towards high-quality, premium wines. CEO Emma Fox stated that affluent wine lovers are prioritizing quality over quantity. The luxury wine segment in the U.S. has shown remarkable resilience, displaying growth rates of approximately 22%, suggesting a robust market for high-end brands.

D.C.’s unique combination of affluent residents and a vibrant diplomatic community offers an ideal backdrop for the British merchant’s offerings, which include rare Champagnes, mature Bourgogne, and collectible whiskies not typically found in American retail. The store aims to cater to both casual wine enthusiasts and serious collectors, providing a blend of ready-to-drink options and younger vintages.

Beyond retail, the company has plans for an engaging events calendar that will feature winemakers and foster connections through curated experiences. The flagship store opens its doors to the public six days a week and includes a dedicated U.S. website to facilitate online sales.

This venture represents not only a significant milestone for Berry Bros. & Rudd but also an exciting opportunity for American consumers to access premium wines that celebrate craftsmanship and heritage.
