Revitalizing a Napa Treasure: The Renovation of Robert Mondavi Winery

Chris Lehoux, December 10, 2025

How do you renovate Napa Valley’s most iconic winery? Carefully. For over two years, Constellation has been undertaking a significant renovation of the Robert Mondavi Winery, investing millions to modernize the facility initially opened by Mondavi in 1966. Revamping a winery that represents the heart of Napa Valley for the last sixty years is a delicate challenge.

The original design by esteemed architect Clifford May embodied a vision where a winery should feel like a home rather than a factory. This ethos is reflected in the winery’s iconic arch and tower, which evoke the aesthetic of the Spanish missions and California ranches built in the 1800s. Guests entering through the arch were welcomed by welcoming verandas overlooking the To Kalon vineyard and the majestic Mayacamas mountains.

As the winery expanded over three decades, various additions were made, which led to a more chaotic architectural narrative. The renovation aims to remove these later structures and introduce new ones that maintain and honor the original spirit of the iconic design.

David Darling, the lead architect from Aidlin Darling Design, emphasized the project’s goal to respect the legacies of both Mondavi and May. The renovation involved stripping the winery back to its essence, resembling the original simplicity—an arch to welcome visitors and a tower for navigation. Fortunately, several elements of the original 1966 structure will be retained or repurposed, such as concrete from demolished areas, which is being utilized to create new earthen walls.

Old fermentation vat staves are being transformed into ceilings for new winery buildings, melding past and present. The craftsmanship of Margrit Mondavi is also honored with her hand-painted ceramic tiles repurposed within the new hospitality kitchen.

While the spirit of Mondavi and his wife Margrit lingers, they are celebrated through various elements across the property. Visitors will find a new stone bench located near the arch, reminiscent of where the couple relished their sunset views over the Mayacamas.

The renovation will culminate in the winery’s reopening to the public in May 2026, ensuring that the legacy of Robert Mondavi continues to thrive in the heart of Napa Valley.
