Continued Decline in Wine Consumption Forecasted in the EU

Chris Lehoux, January 9, 2026

Wine consumption in the European Union (EU) is projected to continue declining, influenced by changing drinking habits and health concerns. According to the EU’s Agricultural Outlook 2025-35, the average wine consumption is expected to decrease by 0.9% annually until 2035, resulting in a per capita intake of about 19.3 liters—down 9% from 2021 levels.

The report highlights a shift in consumer behavior, particularly among younger drinkers who are leaning towards moderation or opting for higher quality wines. Additionally, the growing competition from other beverages is contributing to the decline in traditional wine consumption, especially in historically high-consuming countries like France and Germany.

While wine-based drinks, including no- or low-alcohol options, are gaining traction, their sales volumes are anticipated to remain relatively small. The EU also faces challenges in its key export markets like the United States and the United Kingdom, which are experiencing declines in wine shipments. Consequently, EU wine production is expected to decrease by 0.5% a year, reaching around 138 million hectoliters over the next decade.

The report indicates that a gradual reduction in vineyard areas, projected at 0.6% annually until 2035, could further impact production levels, assuming stable weather conditions. In response to these trends, various EU nations are advocating for measures to support the wine sector, including incentives for vine uprooting.

Additionally, EU wine exports are projected to decline by 0.6% per year in the coming years, and import figures are also expected to fall by 1.9% annually. Although there is growing demand for EU wines in regions like Latin America and Africa, it will likely not be sufficient to offset losses in traditional markets.
