Historic Auction: World’s Most Expensive Bottle of Wine Sold for $812K

Chris Lehoux, April 1, 2026

Last weekend, a remarkable sale took place at the La Paulée auction in Manhattan, where a single bottle of 1945 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti fetched an astonishing $812,500, a new record for the most expensive bottle ever sold at auction. This sale shattered the previous record of $558,000 set in 2018 for the same vintage, marking nearly a 50% increase in value.

Acker, the auction house involved, noted that this transaction secures the 1945 vintage’s reputation as the most sought-after collectible in the history of wine. John Kapon, chairman of Acker, expressed the significance of this event, stating that he has only tasted the 1945 Romanée-Conti three times in his life and described it as the greatest wine he has ever experienced. The auction exemplified the essence of Burgundy, uniting top producers and collectors and achieving an unprecedented outcome.

The identity of the buyer remains undisclosed; however, Acker revealed that the bottle originally belonged to Robert Drouhin, a prominent figure in the Burgundy wine community who operated the esteemed Maison Joseph Drouhin for nearly fifty years.

This particular wine stands out because it was produced from the last harvest before Romanée-Conti replanted its oldest vines, which had survived both World Wars. Known for its exclusive production of red wine primarily from the pinot noir grape, the vineyard typically makes between 5,000 and 6,000 bottles annually, with only around 600 of those being from the celebrated 1945 vintage.

Additionally, this vintage falls into the pre-phylloxera category, as the grapes came from vines that were not designed to resist phylloxera, a pest that decimated many European vineyards in the late 19th century. Experts praise this wine for its unmatched depth and complexity, affirming its status as an extraordinary investment and a unique piece of wine history.
