A recent gathering of professional wine judges assessed over 620 Virginia wines, awarding 113 wineries, including one that earned the prestigious Governor’s Cup Case. However, the celebration was marred by a devastating early frost that hit Virginia’s vineyards at a critical time. Unseasonably warm temperatures had prompted an early bud break, only to be followed by an unexpected cold snap that caused irreparable damage to the vines. This destructive frost affected vineyards not just in Virginia, but also in nearby Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New York.

As East Coast wineries brace for challenges in the 2026 season, there are still notable wines available from this year’s harvest. Virginia winemakers have excelled with varietals like cabernet franc and petite manseng. Some standout selections recently tasted include:

• Glen Manor Vin Rouge 2023 ($37): A Bordeaux-style blend featuring cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot, and petit verdot, showcasing fresh red fruit flavors and sturdy tannins.

• Woodbrook Farm Vineyard Petit Manseng 2024 ($28): This delightful white wine pairs beautifully with summer dishes, boasting aromas of mango and pineapple alongside tropical fruit and citrus notes—perfect with oysters.

• Pollak Vineyards Monticello Reserve Merlot 2023 ($60): A marked improvement in East Coast merlot, this wine is rich with flavors of black cherries and red currants, balanced by good tannins, making it an excellent choice for beef dishes.

• Seyval Blanc Estate Middleburg Virginia 2024 ($30): This round and soft white, crafted from a hybrid grape designed for cooler climates, presents lovely orange notes.

• Rosé Middleburg Virginia 2024 ($31): A blend of chamourcin and seyval blanc, offering citrus and strawberry flavors.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Judgment of Paris, Château Montelena is releasing special wines, including the 2023 Blanc de Blanc and a brandy release made from original vineyard sources. Additionally, a blind tasting event will honor Steven Spurrier’s 85th birthday and the historical tasting’s anniversary at Freemark Abbey.

Warner Bros. Discovery has produced a documentary titled “Stem & Barrel: Napa Valley,” featuring various wineries and winemakers, showcasing the winemaking process from vineyard to cellar.
