Exploring Napa’s Singular Love Affair with the Loire Valley: A Wine Journey

Chris Lehoux, September 7, 2026

In 1996, John Skupny and his wife Tracey ventured into the Napa wine scene with a bold move: they launched a wine label named Lang & Reed, focusing exclusively on Cabernet Franc. The name, derived from the middle names of their two sons, reflects their personal connection to the venture.

At that time, Cabernet Franc was not as popular as it is today, especially in Napa. Many producers primarily used it in Bordeaux blends, blending it with Cabernet Sauvignon rather than showcasing it alone. Skupny recalls that when he shared his ambitious plan with wine writer Jeff Morgan, there was initially a long silence on the line, indicating skepticism in the industry about the potential of a single-varietal Cabernet Franc label.

The perception began to change as the grape gained recognition, particularly due to its prominence in regions such as the Loire Valley and Bordeaux’s right bank. Today, Cabernet Franc’s appeal is skyrocketing, with prices soaring to nearly $12,000 per ton, which is considerably higher than that of high-quality Cabernet Sauvignon.

Skupny’s approach was to draw inspiration from the regions where Cabernet Franc truly shines, believing in its ability to represent a unique expression in Napa. Their commitment has helped position Lang & Reed as a notable player in the evolving narrative of California wine, particularly for those who appreciate the depth and character that Cabernet Franc can provide.
