The Rise of Cal-Ital: Embracing a Culinary Fusion Movement

Chris Lehoux, January 29, 2025

Thirty years ago, the term "Cal-Ital" often evoked negative reactions among discerning wine consumers. Many had been disappointed by the low-quality, mass-produced wines that flooded the market as producers sought to capitalize on the latest trends. By the early 2000s, the Cal-Ital movement had largely faded, leaving a modest legacy primarily in the form of Pinot Grigio cultivation in California, with around 15,000 acres dedicated to this grape.

However, behind the scenes, a dedicated group of winemakers and grape growers have been diligently working to resurrect and refine Italian varietals in California’s diverse terroirs. Their innovative efforts have led to remarkable wines that are capturing attention and are now hard to overlook.

The Italian Influence on California Wine

In the early days of California viticulture, the industry was dominated by German, Swiss, and Hungarian immigrants, with few Italians among them. One of the earliest known Italian vintners was Andrea Arata, who planted vines in Amador County in 1853, contributing to the region’s development as a hub for Italian American winemaking. Napa Valley welcomed its first Italian producer, Giacomo Migliavacca, in 1866, establishing a major presence in the area.

Another significant figure was Andrea Sbarboro, an immigrant from Genoa, who founded the Italian Swiss Colony in 1881. This initiative was not just about wine but aimed to create a social community for Italian immigrants, showcasing the deeper cultural importance of wine in Italian heritage.

The resurgence of interest in true Italian varietals is indicative of a new era for California wine, with winemakers focusing on quality and authenticity, transforming the Cal-Ital narrative from a cautionary tale to a story of revival and excellence.
