Remembering Martine Saunier: A Trailblazing Wine Importer and Filmmaker

Chris Lehoux, February 11, 2025

Martine Saunier, a pioneering wine importer and filmmaker, passed away on February 9 from lung cancer at the age of 91. Renowned for introducing a range of exceptional wines from Burgundy and the Rhône Valley to the U.S. market, she left a significant mark on the wine industry over her expansive career.

Born in Paris in 1934, Saunier spent her childhood in the Mâconnais, where her love for wine blossomed as she participated in grape harvests and learned from local vintners. After graduating with a business degree in Paris, she briefly worked in public relations before relocating to San Francisco in 1964, following her marriage to a local doctor.

Her exploration of Napa Valley wines led her to seek opportunities in importing French wines. It was in 1969 during her first buying trip to France that Saunier cemented her focus on Burgundy and Rhône wines, establishing relationships with notable producers like Henri Jayer and Jacques Reynaud. By the mid-1970s, she had successfully entered the distribution side of the business.

In 1979, leveraging personal resources and a deep conviction in her mission, she founded Martine’s Wines. As an importer, she championed the distribution of high-quality, estate-bottled French wines across the U.S., cultivating a reputation built on trust and quality. Notably, her association with winemaker Lalou Bize-Leroy further strengthened her portfolio.

Saunier’s contributions extended beyond importing wine; she ventured into filmmaking, showcasing the intricate processes of winemaking. In collaboration with producer David Kennard, she released the documentaries "A Year in Burgundy," "A Year in Champagne," and "A Year in Port," which reinforced her legacy in the wine community.

Her passing leaves behind a legacy of inspiration, particularly for women in the wine industry. Saunier is survived by her stepsons, including musician Huey Lewis.
