Excitement Soars at Napa’s Annual Barrel Auction as Bidders Embrace the Latest Vintage Chris Lehoux, February 28, 2025 When the final gavel struck at the 29th Premiere Napa Valley Auction, the atmosphere was filled with celebratory optimism about the future of Napa Valley wines. This year’s auction, which took place on February 22 in the Barrel Room of the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone in St. Helena, raised an impressive $3.3 million. The funds will support the mission of the Napa Valley Vintners (NVV), an organization dedicated to promoting and protecting the valley. “We’re thrilled with this year’s auction results,” stated NVV president and CEO Linda Reiff. “The support shown speaks volumes about our trade partners’ dedication and the exceptional quality of the 2023 vintage.” The Premiere Napa Valley event brings together trade members from around the world to network and taste wines in the days leading up to the auction. It provides an opportunity for attendees to meet some of the globe’s top winemakers and sample the latest vintage. Like Burgundy’s Hospices de Beaune, the barrel auction is exclusive to members of the wine trade, though consumers can access the wines through retail bidding. This year’s auction featured 194 lots sold in increments of five, ten, or twenty cases. Among them were sixteen lots resulting from collaborations between various wineries and winemakers. The highest bid for a red wine reached $64,800 for five cases of Simon Family Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Vine Hill Ranch Vineyard 2024. The top white wine bid was $22,000 for five cases of Hudson Vineyards Chardonnay Carneros Trillium 2023. Other notable bids came from The Mascot, Quintessa, and collaborative lots from wineries like Davies and Diamond Creek. While this year’s total did not set a record—$6 million was raised in 2016—the $3.3 million was 10 percent higher than the previous year. This increase was attributed to the larger number of lots and the excitement surrounding the 2023 vintage. The NVV has been a nonprofit trade association since 1944, comprising 539 vintner members focused on promoting Napa wines and building community support. The association has invested over $230 million in public healthcare and environmental advocacy initiatives. Reiff expressed gratitude for the strong collaboration felt among partners during this year’s event.
