Debunking the Myths: The Truth About Wine Club Profit Margins in Tasting Rooms

Chris Lehoux, March 12, 2025

Wine clubs are essential to the success of tasting rooms, but the perceived profit margins associated with them might be misleading. Many wine club advocates emphasize their value, citing benefits such as promoting brand loyalty and increasing customer visitation. Furthermore, the lifetime value of club members tends to be substantial, often estimated conservatively between $1,000 to $2,000.

The importance of wine clubs is underscored when considering visitor engagement during events. For example, if a tasting room signs ten new members to a wine club at an event, each with a lifetime value of $1,000, the potential profit can rise significantly. However, the true financial situation is often obscured by budgeting practices that neglect to account for the operational costs incurred by tasting rooms.

In many cases, tasting room staff generate the majority of wine club sign-ups without any costs allocated to the club for labor. Moreover, key expenses such as rent, utilities, and promotional efforts may not be covered by the wine club’s budget, making reported profit margins of 40-60% questionable. A more accurate representation of profit should involve evaluating wine club expenses against the operational support they receive from the tasting room.

To address these discrepancies, it is suggested that wine clubs maintain two budget reports: one reflecting the actual costs incurred, and another that shows a basic profit figure. Tasting rooms should similarly report their profits with and without the contributions of the wine club. Establishing a fair method of dividing operating expenses—perhaps predicated on the club’s share of overall revenue—may bring transparency and fairness to both entities.

Ultimately, understanding and accurately reporting the finances of wine clubs is crucial for a more realistic view of their profitability and operational economics.
