Napa Valley Cabernet Wins Big at the Record-Breaking North Coast Wine Challenge

Chris Lehoux, April 4, 2025

A Cabernet Sauvignon from Fortunati Vineyards in Napa Valley has emerged as the champion of the 13th annual North Coast Wine Challenge, held at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds in Santa Rosa. This competition saw a record 1,147 wine entries from 223 wineries, including 98 that participated for the first time.

The judging panel, consisting of 34 regional experts, found the competition intense, particularly during the final sweepstakes round. Chief judge Daryl Groom noted the historical significance of the award, stating it was the first time a Cabernet Sauvignon won the Best of the Best award, a category that has previously favored varietals like Pinot Noir and Zinfandel.

In addition to the top award, the competition recognized several varietals in various categories, marking another significant first with the Best of Show White being awarded to a dry Riesling from Deodora Estate Vineyards. Groom commended the judges for their willingness to choose this less common varietal, in line with current consumer trends toward lighter wines.

The highlights from the 2025 North Coast Wine Challenge are as follows:

  • Best of the Best: Fortunati Vineyards 2021 Signature Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley
  • Best of Show Sparkling: Chandon (NV) Brut, Los Carneros
  • Best of Show White: Deodora Estate Vineyards 2019 Riesling, Sonoma Coast
  • Best of Show Rosé: Dot 2024 Rosé of Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley
  • Best of Show Red: Fortunati 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley
  • Best of Show Dessert Wine: Sonoma-Cutrer 2023 Late Harvest Chardonnay, Russian River Valley
  • Best of Sonoma County: Deodora Estate Vineyards 2019 Riesling, Sonoma Coast
  • Best of Napa County: Fortunati 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley

  • Best of Lake County: R Vineyards 2023 Viognier, Lake County
  • Best of Solano County: Vezér Family Vineyard 2023 Franci Verdelho, Suisun Valley
