Sipping in the Sky: How Delta Air Lines Curates Its Exquisite In-Flight Wine Lists

Chris Lehoux, April 20, 2025

Airlines are witnessing a robust demand for wine onboard, even as global wine sales decline. Delta Air Lines is addressing this trend by revamping its wine program, combining sensory testing with logistics and cabin design.

Delta begins with over 15,000 wines and narrows it down to about 25 for its in-flight selection, ensuring each wine meets technical and sensory standards suitable for the unique conditions of air travel. These conditions include low air pressure and dry cabin air, which can diminish the flavor and aroma of wines. As a result, the airline focuses on wines that can maintain their profile in flight while also meeting practical packaging and shipping requirements.

The wines chosen for Delta’s list must also fit the airline’s service system, allowing flight attendants to pour and serve efficiently. The training program for flight attendants includes detailed information about each wine, focusing on recognition, sustainability credentials, and flavor profiles.

In its latest updates, Delta added 17 new wines to its list, including options like Domaine Bousquet Reserve Organic Malbec from Argentina and Ken Forrester Old Vine Reserve Chenin Blanc from South Africa. The airline’s champagne offerings have also expanded, thanks to a partnership with Champagne Taittinger aimed at enhancing its business class service, reflecting the popularity of bubbly among travelers.

Despite a noticeable decline in global wine consumption, in-flight wine consumption has remained stable or even increased, suggesting a unique market dynamic within air travel. United Airlines and Air France have also reported significant wine consumption aboard their flights, underscoring the continuing interest in wine during air travel.

Delta’s approach to curating a thoughtful wine list illustrates a commitment to delivering a refined in-flight experience, balancing flavor, logistics, and passenger preferences effectively.
