Tipping Etiquette for Take-Home Wine Purchases from Restaurant Tastings Chris Lehoux, April 22, 2025 Dear Dr. Vinny, What is proper tipping etiquette when buying bottles to take home from a restaurant that hosts wine events and sells bottles of the wines tasted? If I buy a case of wine, am I expected to tip? If so, how much? —Nakeshia, Chicago Dear Nakeshia, That’s a great question! Tipping can be a bit complex, especially as we encounter more tipping opportunities in various transactions. Generally, I believe in tipping generously, especially when enjoying wine at a restaurant. However, the protocol for tipping in retail transactions, such as purchasing wine after a tasting event, can vary. If you buy a case of wine, you shouldn’t feel obligated to tip based on the total price or even feel compelled to tip at all. Consider the context: Was someone particularly helpful or friendly? Did they assist you with carrying your wine? If staff members went above and beyond in their service, then a flat tip seems appropriate—somewhere between $5 to $20 would be acceptable. It’s best to offer cash if possible, as tips can often be pooled by management rather than directly benefiting the staff who served you. —Dr. Vinny For more insights on dining and wine etiquette, visit Wine Spectator.
