Virginia Wine Takes Center Stage in Paris: A Toast to Excellence! Chris Lehoux, April 22, 2025 Virginia has emerged as an unexpected contender in the wine world, gaining attention for its quality despite being a smaller producer compared to states like California, Oregon, and Washington. This rise can be attributed to a dedicated effort by its winemakers to create premium wines and boost wine tourism in the region. In February, Virginia showcased its wines at Wine Paris, a trade fair that marked a significant promotional effort for the state’s wineries. With 10 distinct regions and 8 American Viticultural Areas (AVAs), Virginia has about 5,000 acres dedicated to vineyards, growing approximately 30 different grape varieties. Notably, varieties such as Chardonnay, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon dominate, but unique grapes like Petit Manseng and Viognier are also cultivated. Initially, the Virginia wine industry struggled, suffering setbacks due to pests and the unsuitable climate for European grapes. It wasn’t until the 1970s that winemakers began working with grafted European vines. Since then, the industry has flourished from around 50 wineries in the mid-1990s to over 300 today, attracting 2.5 million visitors annually. Barboursville Vineyards, established in 1976, is one of Virginia’s pioneering wineries. Its top wine, Octagon, a Bordeaux blend, exemplifies the quality that Virginia can produce. Other noteworthy wineries include King Family Vineyards, known for its traditional method sparkling wines, Rosemont Vineyards, focusing on Cabernet Franc, and Château Morrisette, which produces a high-quality Vidal Blanc. This growth reflects a commitment to quality and a passion for Virginia’s potential in the global wine scene, as illustrated by the thoughtful diversity in their wine offerings and the enthusiastic promotion of their unique terroirs.
