Sonoma County Barrel Auction: A Boost for the Local Wine Industry Chris Lehoux, May 6, 2025 More than 300 members from the wine industry gathered on Friday for the 11th annual Sonoma County Barrel Auction at Landmark Vineyards Hop Kiln Estate in Healdsburg. This event, held in collaboration with American AgCredit, aimed to raise crucial funds for Sonoma County Vintners, which supports marketing and policy advocacy for the region’s wineries and other local nonprofits. The total funds raised will be disclosed later in the week. The auction offers a unique opportunity for both national and international wine buyers and media members to access exclusive, limited-edition wines for resale, appealing particularly to collectors of ultra-premium wines. Michael Haney, the executive director of Sonoma County Vintners, emphasized the event’s importance for fostering connections within the trading community and showcasing the region’s quality wines. Honorees of the Event At the event’s beginning, David Hirsch, founder of Hirsch Vineyards, received a Lifetime Achievement Award for his significant contributions to the region’s wine industry. His vineyards in the Fort Ross-Seaview appellation are known for producing some of Sonoma County’s most sought-after Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Hank Wetzel, founder of Alexander Valley Vineyards, was honored as the “Sonoma County Icon.” His senior project at U.C. Davis in 1974 laid the groundwork for the winery, which has since contributed to the development of the Alexander Valley appellation. The Sonoma County Innovators award was given to David S. Stare, founder of Dry Creek Vineyard, along with his daughter Kim Stare Wallace and partner Don Wallace for their pioneering work in the region, including the production of distinctive wines like Fumé Blanc. Haney remarked on the impact these individuals have had on promoting Sonoma County wines and the innovation they’ve brought to the industry. Auction Highlights The auction was led by John Curley, known for his lively style, as he sold 59 unique wine lots, including collaborations between esteemed winemakers. Notable offerings included a Terra Rossa Pinot Noir and a "Fellowship of the Panther" Pinot Noir, alongside a variety of other distinctive wines. Despite international participation from attendees in Denmark, Japan, and Norway, Canadian buyers had to cancel their attendance due to ongoing tariff issues. Haney expressed hope for resolving these issues soon, allowing Sonoma County wines to regain access to Canadian markets.
