Celebrating 55 Years: Sicily’s First Single Vineyard Italian Wine

Chris Lehoux, May 13, 2025

The rich Italian island of Sicily, known for its striking landscapes and diverse culture, is celebrating a significant milestone in its wine heritage. The Tasca family, a cornerstone of Sicilian winemaking, is commemorating the 55th anniversary of its first officially recognized single vineyard, the "Rosso del Conte," established in 1959.

The Tasca family’s legacy spans 195 years and encompasses a broad spectrum of Sicilian wines produced across several estates. The "Rosso del Conte" vineyard is historically important, featuring two indigenous grape varieties: Nero d’Avola and Perricone. These grapes are cultivated using traditional bush vine techniques at an elevation of over 1,500 feet, enhancing their quality and character.

Today, Alberto Tasca carries forward his family’s viticulture tradition, emphasizing sustainability and innovative techniques. He’s committed to preserving Sicily’s unique winemaking heritage while also implementing modern agricultural practices. His efforts include overseeing research-focused environmental initiatives and projects dedicated to site-specific expressions of the vineyard.

The "San Lucio Vineyard," named in honor of Alberto’s ancestors, particularly his father, Lucio Tasca, symbolizes the family’s journey in Sicilian winemaking. Lucio was instrumental in modernizing this industry, elevating Sicilian wines onto the international stage. Alberto continues this legacy, promoting a vision that blends tradition with innovation.

As the Tasca family reflects on more than five decades of the "Rosso del Conte," they celebrate its success and the personal connections it nurtures within their family history. This vineyard represents not only a significant wine in Sicily’s portfolio but also the dreams and aspirations of generations dedicated to elevating the island’s winemaking reputation.
