How WineFi Is Revolutionizing the Wine Investment Landscape

Chris Lehoux, June 18, 2025

WineFi, a London-based fintech startup, is revolutionizing the wine investment landscape by recently raising £1.5 million in funding. Founded by ex-asset manager Callum Woodcock and collaborator Oliver Thorpe, WineFi seeks to make wine investment more accessible, particularly for younger, digital-native investors who may not traditionally engage in this market.

Historically, wine investment has been seen as exclusive and expensive, requiring deep knowledge about sourcing, provenance, and market trends, along with a significant financial commitment. Current investors face high barriers, including opaque brokerage fees and the risk of fraud. WineFi aims to dismantle these barriers.

The platform introduces an innovative syndicate model starting at £3,000, allowing investors to buy into themed portfolios curated by WineFi’s investment committee based on market data and long-term value prospects. This model enables diversification, enabling investors to hold a broader range of wines than they could independently afford. For more experienced investors, WineFi offers a private client route for tailored portfolios, with all wines stored in a secure facility, ensuring provenance and protecting them from VAT until sold.

WineFi also utilizes a proprietary platform analyzing over 18 million data points on more than 100,000 wines, providing thorough market analysis and risk assessment for investors. Through detailed reporting and performance tracking, clients can access their portfolio information with similar ease to stock trading apps.

Transparency in fees is a key aspect of WineFi’s offering. They charge a 12.5% upfront fee, covering sourcing, brokerage, and insurance, and manage the sale of wines held in syndicates to maximize returns.

Since launching in 2023, WineFi has captured the interest of high-net-worth individuals and the wine trade alike, recently securing investments from notable backers in the wine industry. Their average investor is about 38 years old, much younger than typical fine wine buyers, and appeals to a demographic that values both cultural capital and financial return.

As the wine investment landscape evolves, WineFi aligns with broader trends toward democratizing alternative assets, providing access to those interested in diversifying their portfolios beyond traditional investments. With an impressive growth rate and plans for further development, including blockchain technology to enable fractional ownership, WineFi is poised to reshape how wine investment is viewed and pursued in the coming years.
