The Waldorf Astoria New York Shines Again: Grand Reopening and Three Exciting New Restaurants!

Chris Lehoux, July 25, 2025

One of New York City’s most eagerly anticipated events of the last decade, the historic Waldorf Astoria hotel, reopened its doors on July 15 after extensive renovations. This iconic establishment, which occupies an entire city block along Park Avenue between 49th and 50th Streets, now features three new dining options paired with a remarkable wine cellar.

Having closed its doors in 2017 to transform upper floors into condominium units, the Waldorf was once the world’s largest hotel and has graced countless songs, films, and stories. It has been a favorite gathering place for notable figures such as Frank Sinatra, Herbert Hoover, and Winston Churchill.

The revamped dining scene includes Lex Yard, a flagship American brasserie helmed by Chef Michael Anthony, known for his work at the acclaimed Gramercy Tavern. Lex Yard’s menu, reflecting Anthony’s signature hyper-seasonal approach, offers a mix of classic New York dishes alongside innovative choices like poached halibut in borscht sauce and a unique caviar egg sandwich. It boasts a lively ground-floor bar and a more upscale second floor, catering to a range of dining experiences.

Anthony’s vision for Lex Yard is driven by a commitment to seasonal ingredients, making the job of Natascha Patterer, the beverage director, simpler as well. She emphasizes the importance of blending modern cooking with traditional roots.

Yoshoku, another dining option, focuses on kaiseki, a multi-course Japanese dining experience. Patterer has curated a wine selection that complements not just Yoshoku’s offerings but also those at Lex Yard, featuring a variety of wines including local selections from Long Island and the Finger Lakes, enhancing the dining experience with regional flair.

The final piece of the culinary puzzle is Peacock Alley, a classic cocktail bar known for creative drinks like the “50th St. Martini.” Center stage is a Steinway piano, historically played by renowned composer Cole Porter during his stay at the Waldorf Astoria nearly a century ago, symbolizing the hotel’s rich past as it embraces a vibrant future.
