Wine and Truffles: A Match Made in Culinary Heaven Chris Lehoux, August 11, 2025 An increasing number of wineries in California are diversifying their operations by growing truffles alongside traditional grape production. For example, Hope Family Wines in Paso Robles recently announced the acquisition of an estate dedicated to both sauvignon grapes and organic truffles. This trend follows moves by others in the industry, such as The Donum Estate, which partnered with the American Truffle Company to cultivate Perigord black truffles in Sonoma. Similarly, the Boisset Collection has collaborated with the truffle company to grow these prized fungi at Raymond Vineyards in Napa Valley. Austin Hope, owner and winemaker of Hope Family Wines, expressed a nostalgic connection to truffle farming, linking it to his childhood experiences. His family’s vineyard now spans several brands and was recognized as "American Winery of the Year" by Wine Enthusiast in 2022. He highlighted the agricultural richness of Paso Robles, which historically produced not only grapes but also almonds, olives, and other crops. The rise of truffle farming represents a new wave of artisanal agriculture in the area. Truffles, fetching prices upwards of $1,000 per pound, are challenging to cultivate. They require specific conditions to thrive, growing underground among the roots of certain trees. Additionally, trained dogs are necessary for locating the truffles once matured. Rob Sinskey Vineyards started experimenting with truffle cultivation in Napa’s Carneros region around 15 years ago and has since relocated. Jackson Family Wines also entered the fray, planting hazelnut and oak trees inoculated with truffle spores, with their first harvests occurring six years post-planting. Hope Family Wines is now growing truffles at its newly acquired vineyard, Tufera Farms, which boasts specially cultivated holly oak trees conducive to truffle development. The vineyard, which once belonged to Creston Valley Vineyard, offers a favorable setting for growing high-quality grapes as well. With plans to package truffles through its culinary division, Hope Provisions, the winery aims to further elevate its artisanal offerings. The truffles from Tufera Farms are harvested annually, with collections beginning around the year’s end and continuing into February with the help of trained dogs. As one of over 200 wineries in the Paso Robles region—a key wine-producing area in California—Hope Family Wines is excited to be part of this innovative agricultural movement.
