Napa Valley Wildfire Forces Evacuations and Poses Risk to Vineyards

Chris Lehoux, August 23, 2025

A swift-moving wildfire, known as the Pickett Fire, has been raging in the hills near Calistoga, northern Napa Valley, since 3 p.m. on August 21. This blaze has already consumed over 2,133 acres in less than a day and is only 5 percent contained despite the efforts of firefighters who have been working tirelessly. Fortunately, no injuries or structural damage has been reported, and local vineyard owners have indicated that their properties have not been harmed as of yet.

The fire’s ignition point was near wineries such as Kenefick Ranch and Eisele Vineyard, and it has primarily spread into uninhabited, forested areas. However, the situation has prompted evacuation orders for nearby communities, and there is a looming threat that the fire could advance into the Pope Valley and Howell Mountain regions where vineyards are located.

Jayson Woodbridge, who had previously suffered damage to his Calistoga estate during the 2020 wildfires, expressed relief that his recently acquired Kelly Fleming vineyards and winery remain safe — no damage has occurred to the winery or the house. “I manned the hoses since yesterday afternoon and we stood guard all night,” he stated, commending the efforts of the firefighters on scene. Approximately 350 personnel, along with multiple firefighting vehicles and air support, are currently working to manage the blaze.

The ongoing wildfire raises significant concerns in the wine community, particularly regarding potential smoke taint, which could compromise grape quality as harvest begins. While the smoke from the fire hasn’t settled over the vineyards yet, many in the industry are keeping a close watch. John Conover, managing partner at PlumpJack Collection, noted their fortunate position so far, as they have not encountered smoke directly.

St. Supéry’s CEO, Emma Swain, reported clearer skies at their Dollarhide Ranch despite visible smoke from a distance. As fire conditions remain challenging with ongoing high temperatures, efforts are underway to contain the fire, aided by calmer winds compared to previous days.

As the situation develops, both the firefighters and local wineries continue their vigilant efforts, hoping for a resolution in the coming days.
