Ongoing Investigation Into Napa Wildfire: Latest Updates and Insights

Chris Lehoux, September 20, 2025

Nearly a month after the Pickett wildfire started, the cause of the blaze in the northern hills of Napa Valley remains under investigation. Lawyers representing Hundred Acre Wines, the owner of the property where the fire is believed to have originated, have requested that CalFire examine a potentially faulty car battery as the cause.

According to a letter from Hundred Acre Wines’ attorneys to CalFire, there is evidence of a faulty terminal on a battery inside a trailer near the fire’s starting point. They have urged fire investigators to assess whether the electrical fault could have ignited the fire.

This request for investigation marks the third possible explanation for the wildfire’s origin. Local media reports indicated that on the afternoon of August 21, the day the fire broke out, CalFire radio traffic mentioned a potential controlled burn in the area. However, CalFire has prohibited controlled burns since early June due to hot and dry weather conditions. A spokesperson for Hundred Acre stated that no controlled burns had occurred.

In the aftermath of the blaze, it was reported that investigators questioned a contract worker and a manager at Hundred Acre regarding the possibility that discarded ashes from an outdoor oven may have sparked the fire. The winery’s owner, Jayson Woodbridge, has not commented on these inquiries.

The fire spread quickly in its initial 24 hours, extending northeast towards Pope Valley before cooler, more humid weather aided firefighters in containing it. After 17 days, CalFire announced the fire was fully contained, having burned 6,819 acres, resulted in the destruction of one house and four outbuildings, and reported no injuries. Although most wine regions were spared, some vineyards were affected, and wineries in Pope Valley and on Howell Mountain are conducting tests for smoke taint. Preliminary estimates indicate crop losses could reach $65 million, according to Napa’s agricultural commissioner.
