Barrels, Beneficiaries, and a Bear: How the Auction of Washington Wines Raised $4 Million for Charity

Chris Lehoux, September 27, 2025

The Auction of Washington Wines raised over $4 million for charity during its 38th annual event, held from August 14 to 16 in Woodinville. This prestigious auction brought together winemakers and consumers for a weekend filled with exceptional food, wine, and competitive bidding. Since its inception in 1988, the Auction has generated more than $72 million for charitable causes. This year’s event continues a positive trend, marking the fourth consecutive year of raising more than $4 million, with last year’s total being $4.25 million.

The beneficiaries of this year’s auction include Seattle Children’s Hospital, Washington State University’s Viticulture and Enology program, and Vital Wines, which supports healthcare and other resources for vineyard workers.

Jamie Peha, the executive director of the auction, expressed gratitude to the wineries and community for their generosity, emphasizing the auction’s lasting impact on the supported institutions. The weekend featured two days of live bidding events, including the Winemaker Picnic and Barrel Auction, hosted by Chateau Ste. Michelle. The event attracted over 1,000 guests who enjoyed wine samples and gourmet food while raising $125,500 from exclusive wine barrels offered by more than 100 wineries.

The gala live auction on August 16 was led by actor Kyle MacLachlan, who highlighted the collective strength of the Washington wine community. During the event, the top auction item, which included wine and a five-night stay in Bordeaux with MacLachlan, fetched an impressive $140,000. Another notable auction lot from Marchese Antinori raised $90,000, providing a guided tour of their wineries in Washington and Napa Valley.

The gala concluded with a record-setting paddle raise where patrons Stuart and Susan Kuehne generously donated $250,000, contributing to the event’s total of over $3 million raised that evening. Jean-François Pellet, this year’s honorary vintner, praised the lively atmosphere and camaraderie present at the auction, reflecting the community spirit that fuels its success.
