NYC Wine & Food Festival: A Potential Lifeline for South Street Seaport

Chris Lehoux, October 14, 2025

After a brief stay in Brooklyn, the New York City Wine & Food Festival (NYCWFF) is returning to Manhattan this week, with hopes of revitalizing the struggling South Street Seaport. Celebrating its 18th year, the festival will take place from Wednesday to Sunday, featuring renowned chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten as the culinary curator overseeing more than 50 events, including a high-priced dinner with Chef José Andrés.

Vongerichten has a special connection to the Seaport, having previously worked to transform its historic Tin Building into a culinary hotspot. This project has faced challenges since its opening in 2022, but the festival could shine a spotlight on the area, according to Lee Brian Schrager, founder of NYCWFF. He expressed hopes that more visitors would explore the Seaport, which has yet to experience the expected boom.

The festival’s move back to Manhattan comes after logistical issues in Brooklyn led to difficulties for restaurateurs in transporting their dishes. Schrager noted that New York City has limited options for large gatherings, and he has long desired to host the festival at the Seaport. This year’s festival opens with “A Taste of the Tin Building,” featuring music by DJ Cassidy and other star-studded events.

Over the course of the festival, attendees can look forward to numerous highlights, including the return of Rachael Ray to host the popular Blue Moon Burger Bash, a Grand Tasting showcasing the best of Gotham’s culinary offerings, and special events hosted by celebrity chefs, including Bobby Flay and Padma Lakshmi. Proceeds will benefit The Event Zero Foundation and the James Beard Foundation, which promote sustainability and culinary excellence.

Additionally, fellow chef JJ Johnson has launched a BBQ festival called The Cookout, aiming to celebrate Afro-Caribbean and African-American culture, with proceeds supporting food initiatives in New York.

As New York prepares for these culinary events, the focus remains on community, culture, and the enduring appeal of good food, promising an exciting week for both locals and visitors alike.
