Remembering Sam Sebastiani: A Legacy of Winemaking and Conservation in Sonoma Valley

Chris Lehoux, October 14, 2025

Sam Sebastiani, a prominent figure in California’s wine industry, passed away on October 9 at the age of 84 in his Sonoma home, following an eight-year battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Born on November 19, 1940, Sam was the grandson of Samuele Sebastiani, who founded Sebastiani Vineyards in 1904, a winery that became one of the largest in the United States. Sam began his tenure at the family winery in 1967 and took over as president in 1980 after his father’s death. Despite a strong affinity for winemaking, his vision for the winery led to his departure in 1986 due to disagreements with family members over production strategy, particularly his shift toward higher-quality wines over the cheaper jug wines the winery had been known for.

In 1989, Sebastiani quickly moved on to establish Viansa Winery & Italian Marketplace with his then-wife, Vickie. The winery, inspired by his Italian heritage, focused on varietals like Sangiovese and Pinot Grigio and became a celebrated destination in Sonoma’s Carneros District. Sebastiani was also a passionate conservationist, successfully restoring nearly 100 acres of wetlands to protect local habitats.

The Sebastiani family sold their namesake winery to the Foley Wine Group in 2008. In 2006, ownership of Viansa was passed to their children, who subsequently sold it the following year. In later years, Sam ventured into winemaking under the La Chertosa label, named after the Tuscan monastery significant to his family’s history.

Despite the challenges he faced, Chris Sebastiani, Sam’s son, reflected on his father’s legacy, emphasizing the meaningful time they spent together in the last years of his life. Sam is survived by his wife Robin, seven children, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His commitment to both winemaking and environmental conservation remains a cornerstone of his legacy.
