Continued Vine Removals Amid Structural Changes in the Wine Industry

Chris Lehoux, December 7, 2025

Vine removals in California’s wine industry are expected to continue significantly over the next two years as growers deal with persistent oversupply and decreased demand. This trend was emphasized during the 13th annual Wine Industry Network Expo held in Santa Rosa, where industry analysts highlighted the urgent need for a restructuring of the state’s wine business.

The numbers are telling: California crushed about 2.8 million tons of wine grapes last year; this figure is projected to drop to below 2.4 million tons in 2025. Notably, in regions like Sonoma County, premium wine production is also witnessing drastic changes with only around 150,000 tons crushed this year— a level not seen without environmental issues for three decades.

This downturn is underscored by increased vineyard removals, with over 38,000 acres deleted from California’s wine grape acreage, making up about 13% of the total. Specific figures include 2,700 acres from Sonoma County, 3,100 from Napa County, and 830 from Mendocino County.

Experts predict that the situation will likely worsen before stability is reached, projecting more vineyard removals in 2026 and 2027. They believe that the industry is facing a structural change rather than a temporary cyclical dip. The overall U.S. wine market is also cooling, with drastic declines in exports and reduced annual sales growth.

To survive the upcoming transition, industry leaders are advising wineries to focus on direct-to-consumer sales, utilize smarter financial management, and maintain inventory discipline. These measures are essential for ensuring profitability amidst challenging market conditions.

Moreover, rebuilding engagement with younger consumers and establishing authentic brand relationships have emerged as critical for future market stability. Experts argue that addressing the changing perceptions and experiences of wine consumption among younger generations is crucial for the industry’s revival.

As the California wine industry adapts to these challenges, the underlying message remains clear: Improvement hinges on effective supply management and a renewed connection with consumer values.
