Exploring the 2023 Vintage: Insights from Premier Napa Valley

Chris Lehoux, January 4, 2026

Each year, tasting wines provides an insightful glimpse into the quality of recent vintages in Napa Valley. The Premiere Napa Valley event, organized by the Napa Valley Vintners Association, serves as a key venue for this exploration. Unlike the more famous Auction Napa Valley, which funds charitable causes, Premiere Napa Valley’s proceeds support the Napa Vintners organization. At this event, winemakers craft exclusive wines (produced in limited quantities of 5 to 25 cases) available for tasting prior to the auction, typically held in February.

Historically, I have participated in extensive tastings during this event; however, recent scheduling conflicts have limited my experience to fewer wines sampled at various events and through bottled samples provided by the Vintners. Despite this, these wines predominantly reflect a singular vintage, allowing for a detailed examination of quality.

During my latest tasting, I focused on the 2023 vintage, which many experts hailed as “the vintage of a lifetime.” This vintage stood out due to its cooler climate—one of the coolest in over a decade. The preceding winter brought significant moisture, with some areas receiving up to 58 inches of rain, dwarfing the typical average of 31 inches. The cold winter temperatures delayed bud break until mid-April, and spring continued with a cool trend through flowering in early June.

During summer, while days turned warm, nighttime temperatures remained cooler than average, and high temperatures rarely exceeded 90 degrees. The growing season boasted a balance of moisture, warmth, and ideal ripening conditions, facilitating exceptional fruit harvesting.

The 2023 wines are remarkable, showcasing brightness, outstanding acidity, and fine-tuned tannins. Many wines reflect more herbal notes amidst ripe fruit than is common. Although I lack technical specifications regarding alcohol levels, I suspect they might be a bit lower than usual.

Comparing the 2023 vintage to the celebrated 2021 vintage, which I previously deemed Napa’s best in decades, proves challenging based solely on barrel samples. While I cautiously suggest that 2023 may have the potential to equal 2021, it’s too early to draw definitive conclusions based on current tastings. Most 2023 Cabernets are yet to be fully released, with a few appearing in the market recently. I look forward to reassessing this vintage once I can sample the finished wines later this year.
