Trader Joe’s Wine Store Plans in Uniondale Denied by Liquor Authority

Chris Lehoux, January 31, 2026

Trader Joe’s effort to establish a wine store in Uniondale, New York, was recently denied by the New York State Liquor Authority. The proposed location for the store was within the Gallery at Westbury Plaza, where a Trader Joe’s grocery store already operates.

The liquor authority board decided against the application after hearing from multiple local liquor store owners who argued that the new store would hurt their businesses. Daniel M. DeFerrari, general manager of Westbury Liquors, voiced concerns, stating that the entrance of another national chain could be detrimental to local shops already facing tough competition and declining sales.

During the meeting, board members noted that there are already seven liquor retailers located within a mile and a half of Trader Joe’s proposed site. This included Total Wine, a significant competitor with a nearby location. According to board member Commissioner Edgar De Leon, most of these stores were expected to see declines in sales for the coming year, further emphasizing the saturating market.

Trader Joe’s aimed to open a 4,978-square-foot wine store stocked with a variety of private-label wines and specialty items, appealing to local consumers. However, with the existing competition and potential sales drops, the board concluded that granting the license would not serve the public’s convenience or advantage.

Additionally, the board received support for the denial from local representatives, including letters from Assemblyman Edward P. Ra and industry groups opposing the application.

In New York, regulations limit stores to having only one liquor or wine license, which further complicates Trader Joe’s ambitions. The retailer previously operated a wine store in Manhattan but closed it in 2022 amid accusations of anti-union practices.

While Trader Joe’s remains a significant player in the grocery market with more than 600 locations nationwide, its foray into wine sales in New York will continue to face challenges due to stringent local regulations.
