Exploring the 2024 Vintage in Napa: Insights from Premiere Napa Valley

Chris Lehoux, March 20, 2026

Longtime readers may recall my passion for sampling barrel wines to gauge the potential of recent vintages in Napa Valley. Typically, I participate in the annual Premiere Napa Valley auction organized by the Napa Valley Vintners Association, a highlight for wine enthusiasts.

In recent years, event scheduling clashed with family vacations, limiting my experience to tasting leftover barrel samples. However, this year, the auction returned to a Saturday schedule, enabling me to partake in tasting the 2024 vintage alongside nearly 180 barrel samples, albeit within a tight two-hour window.

A Warm and Untroubled Vintage

The primary dilemma for the 2024 vintage stems from the previous year’s acclaim, where 2023 was deemed the “vintage of a lifetime” by the Napa Vintners. While it’s challenging to surpass such accolades, the 2024 vintage displayed its own merits, with praise for its smooth flowering, consistent ripening, and favorable weather conditions.

Despite being a scorching season, with over 40 days exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit, the previous winter’s rains—10% above average—provided essential moisture for the vines, allowing them to withstand the heat of summer. As a result, Napa enjoyed 13% more growing degree days than in 2023, culminating in a harvest that began in August and concluded rapidly in October, significantly influenced by an intense heat wave.

Tasting Through the Barrels

Reflecting the sun-kissed essence of Napa, the best wines of 2024 present a generous, juicy, and lush profile. Modern farming techniques have adapted to the extremes of climate, emphasizing leaf preservation for grapes rather than aggressive sun exposure.

Producers committed to quality crafted wines that maintained the right acidity balance, ensuring the fruit was not overly ripe. Although 2024 lacks the sharp edge of 2023, its wines are immensely pleasurable and accessible early on, inviting consumers to enjoy them sooner.

In summary, 2024 evokes traditional weather patterns, marking a classic year that aligns with Napa’s reputation as a premier wine region. Many wines are likely to be available as early as late 2026.

These notes originate from a recent tasting of barrel samples.

For those interested in acquiring wines from this vintage, the Napa Vintners provide a directory of these wines and sellers, which will be updated as bottles are released in late 2026 and into 2027.
