Continuing the Legacy: The Global Impact of Gérard Basset on Wine Education

Chris Lehoux, March 27, 2026

The legacy of Gérard Basset, a celebrated figure in the wine industry renowned for being the only person to simultaneously hold the titles of Master Sommelier, Master of Wine, and World’s Best Sommelier, continues to flourish through the work of his family and the Gérard Basset Foundation. During a recent gathering in Miami, his son Romané Basset, discussed the profound impact Gérard had on the industry and shared insights on how the foundation helps aspiring wine professionals around the world.

Romané revealed that, despite his father’s modest beginnings and lack of formal education, Gérard was profoundly aware of how mentorship shaped his journey into the wine world. After Gérard’s passing, Romané and his mother established the foundation to honor his legacy by offering scholarships and grants to promising individuals in the wine industry. The foundation currently supports nearly 100 scholars from 35 countries and has broadened its reach significantly, impacting over 1,500 people globally.

One of the beneficiaries, Leila Killoran, exemplifies the foundation’s ethos. A scholarship winner and aspiring Master of Wine, Killoran’s journey from a challenging upbringing in Manchester to receiving life-changing opportunities in the wine industry epitomizes the spirit of resilience and ambition that Gérard championed. Her educational journey included overcoming obstacles such as financial constraints and personal challenges, including witnessing her family’s escape from a war-torn Iran during her childhood.

Another recipient, Sera Svitlana Karamshuk, a Ukrainian scientist turned wine enthusiast, illustrated how the foundation not only provided financial support but also facilitated connections and access to opportunities previously unavailable to her. Karamshuk’s unique outlook combines scientific expertise with a love for wine, emphasizing the interconnectedness of her past experiences.

Meanwhile, Michael Juergens, a co-founder of Bhutan Wine Company, shared his unique mission of developing a wine industry in Bhutan. Pursuing an ambitious vision, he and his wife, Ann Cross, utilize the foundation’s resources to build wine education infrastructure and cultivate a new generation of wine professionals in a country with no existing wine tradition.

The conversations during the event highlighted not only the successes of the scholarship recipients but also the visionary leadership qualities instilled by Gérard Basset. Romané emphasized the importance of compassion in leadership, asserting that the foundation’s support fuels motivation and a sense of belonging among its awardees.

Through the Gérard Basset Foundation, Gérard’s legacy is not merely about awarding scholarships; it encapsulates a commitment to fostering talent, promoting diversity, and building a culture within the wine industry that honors service and mentorship. The foundation’s efforts ensure that the values Gérard lived by continue to thrive, paving the way for future generations of wine professionals.
