Global Old Vine Registry Hits Milestone with Over 10,000 Vineyards Registered

Chris Lehoux, March 26, 2026

In a remarkable accomplishment for the wine community, the Old Vine Registry has surpassed 10,000 registered vineyards in just three years, achieving this milestone ahead of its original goal set for June 2027. The registry, which aims to document the world’s oldest vineyards, was launched as a crowdsourced initiative in 2023, specifically targeting vineyards that are older than 35 years.

As of March 26, 2026, the Old Vine Registry is now home to over 10,000 vineyards across 42 countries, representing more than 40,900 hectares of historic plantings and featuring 1,144 grape varieties. The project’s mantra emphasizes the importance of identifying what needs protection, as stated by Alder Yarrow, the Architect and Manager of the registry, highlighting the cultural and agricultural value of old vineyards.

This initiative not only documents the existence and details of old vineyards but also aims to increase awareness of their significance and promote their preservation. The registry’s growth has been fueled by contributions from various stakeholders in the wine community, including growers, researchers, importers, and regional wine organizations.

The notable 10,000th vineyard added to the registry is Beaumont Wine Estate’s Hope Vineyard in South Africa, which was planted with Chenin Blanc in 1974. As the Old Vine Registry continues to expand, it encourages further contributions from vineyards, regions, and researchers worldwide, aiming to represent every region with historic vineyards.
