Does the Viral Wine Cork Trick Really Work? Exploring the Buzz Online

Chris Lehoux, April 8, 2026

I recently came across a simple yet practical kitchen hack involving a wine cork that could help prevent burns when handling hot pots. The idea is ingenious: by wedging a cork onto a pot lid or pan handle, it serves as a visual and physical reminder that the handle is hot, allowing you to grip it without burning your fingers. This trick not only repurposes corks that might otherwise be thrown away but also adds a layer of safety in the kitchen.

I discovered this hack through Sidney Raskind, a creator on TikTok known for sharing clever tips. In his video, he demonstrated how to use a larger champagne cork to create a buffer between your hand and a hot pot handle. It looked easy enough, and I was eager to see if it held up when tested in real-life situations.

To give it a shot, I grabbed a few corks; a typical red wine cork and a larger cork from a sparkling wine bottle. The success of this hack, however, varies based on the type of cork and the cookware used.

My Experience Testing the Hack

  1. Larger Corks Work Better: The cork from a champagne bottle worked significantly better because of its wider, mushroom-like shape. This provided more grip and insulation against heat. The standard red wine cork, in contrast, felt loose on all the pot handles I tried.

  2. Stability Depends on Pot Handle Type: The trick worked best with pots that had shorter handles. When the handle was closer to the lid, the cork fit more securely, making it easier and safer to manipulate. For longer handles, the cork often felt too loose, making me hesitant to trust it completely.

  3. Test Before Use: It’s crucial to experiment with the cork before you actually need it while cooking. Use a cool pot to ensure the cork fits well and won’t slip when you need to pick up a hot pan.

  4. Not a Complete Solution: While this hack can help as a reminder or buffer, it shouldn’t be solely relied upon. It is an extra layer of awareness, but a kitchen towel is still a strong alternative for preventing burns.

Conclusion

Overall, while I appreciate the creativity behind using a cork as a heat-resistant handle extension, it’s more of a fun trick than a fail-safe method. Depending on your cookware and corks, it may or may not provide enough support for safe handling of hot items. For anyone with corks lying around, it’s a lighthearted experiment worth trying, but always keep caution in mind.
