Revolutionizing Wine: The Futuristic AI ‘Grape Ripeness Detector’ Set to Transform the Industry

Chris Lehoux, April 13, 2026

Scientists have developed an AI-powered device known as the "grape ripeness detector," aimed at enhancing efficiency in wine production. This innovative handheld sensor quickly assesses the ripeness of grapes, significantly aiding vineyard operators in the all-important harvest timing.

Researchers at Queen Mary University of London invented the tool, which combines advanced machine learning with vineyard expertise. The machine provides winemakers with real-time, accurate data on whether grapes are ready for harvest, eliminating the need for laborious manual sampling and destructive testing methods.

Xuechun Wang, a post-doctoral researcher at QMUL, explains how the technology works: “Our optical sensors detect how grapes absorb and reflect different wavelengths of light, allowing us to analyze spectral patterns to estimate ripeness directly from the vine without causing damage.” This handheld device, named RipenAI, enables grape pickers to check ripeness instantly and can also be used throughout a vineyard to monitor crop health and readiness continuously.

The QMUL team is also exploring how to integrate this technology with robotic grape pickers in collaboration with Extend Robotics and Saffron Grange Vineyard in Essex.

Nick Edwards, a director at Saffron Grange Vineyard, emphasized the importance of harvesting grapes at the right time to produce high-quality wine. “Timely access to accurate ripeness information allows us to prepare for harvest labor and winery operations with confidence,” he said.

The deployment of RipenAI not only promises major benefits for winemakers but will also contribute to the growing demand for precision in grape harvesting. Early trials at Saffron Grange have shown promising results, and researchers hope to expand their testing to other vineyards, agritech companies, and fruit orchards in the next harvest season.

The technology is designed to adapt to various fruits, suggesting its potential impact could extend far beyond the wine industry. With the UK’s wine industry on the rise, such innovations reflect a significant step toward advanced agricultural methods, echoing the growing global trend of precision farming.
