Vinography Unboxed: Weekly Wine Insights – Highlights from 5/10/26

Hello and welcome to my weekly exploration of wine samples that grace my doorstep. In this edition of Vinography Unboxed, I’m excited to share some standout bottles that have caught my attention recently.

This week, I tasted several remarkable Chardonnays from Abbot Claim Vineyard in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, owned by Antony Beck. This vineyard sources fruit from its own 32 acres while also purchasing from notable sites around the valley. I have two Chardonnays to highlight: the first is the X-Omni, which features volcanic soils and an appealing reductive quality. The second Chardonnay, from the renowned Temperance Hill Vineyard, contains a bit more oak than ideal, but showcases an admirable lean flinty character.

Next up are three Zinfandels and a Sangiovese from Acorn Winery located in the Russian River Valley. The Alegría Vineyard supplies fruit for one Zinfandel and the Sangiovese, both of which are blended with other grape varieties. The other two Zinfandels come from unique single-vineyard sources. I find these wines to be some of the best in Acorn’s portfolio, showing a harmonious balance of ripeness and vibrant acidity. With their recent acquisition by Ancient Oak Cellars, purchasing details may become clearer soon.

Rounding out my selections are new releases from Weathereye Vineyard, including their Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cabernet Sauvignon, and a proprietary red blend called The Raven’s Share. These wines exemplify the robust character of the rocky terrain in Washington’s Red Mountain AVA. While they possess a bold essence, they are well-balanced with acidity, making them suitable for aging.

2023 Abbot Claim “X Omni” Chardonnay, Willamette Valley, Oregon
Displays a light gold color, scenting of struck match, white flowers, and lemon pith. The palate mingles lemon oil and peel with white flowers and a hint of buttered sourdough. A lingering finish features crushed nuts and sweet oak. Aged for 12 months in barrel, followed by six months in steel. 13.5% alcohol. Score: 9. Cost: $135. click to buy.

2022 Abbot Claim “Temperance Hill Vineyard” Chardonnay, Willamette Valley, Oregon
Similar in appearance and a robust bouquet of wet pavement and struck flint. The flavor profiles include toasted oak blending with saline lemon and hints of vanilla. This wine finishes with a chalky essence. 13% alcohol. Score: 8.5-9. Cost: $135. click to buy.

2023 Acorn Winery “Alegría Vineyards” Zinfandel, Sonoma County, California
Medium garnet, presenting aromas of blackberry and bramble. An excellent balance of juicy flavors and baking spices complemented by bright acidity. 14.2% alcohol. Score: 9. Cost: $42.

2023 Acorn Winery “Battaglini Vineyard” Zinfandel, Sonoma County, California
Inky purple with vibrant blackberry aromas, this wine is marked by electric acidity and significant layers of ripe flavor. 14.8% alcohol. Score: 9-9.5. Cost: TBD.

2023 Acorn Winery “Pagnano Vineyard” Zinfandel, Sonoma County, California
Deep garnet, featuring intense blackberry and blueberry notes with a persistently long finish. 14.5% alcohol. Score: 9-9.5. Cost: TBD.

2023 Acorn Winery “Alegría Vineyards” Sangiovese, Sonoma County, California
Medium ruby, exhibiting cherry and herb aromas complemented by sweet oak and bright acidity. 13.6% alcohol. Score: 9. Cost: $45.

2023 Weathereye Vineyards “Estate” Syrah, Columbia Valley, Washington
