From Family Dream to State College Hot Spot: The Evolution of University Wine Company

Chris Lehoux, May 18, 2026

Wednesday afternoons at University Wine Company buzz with activity as Mahjong players gather at carefully arranged tables, sipping wine while overlooking the picturesque landscape of rolling hills and grapevines. However, this spring has posed challenges, with frost damaging early vine growth. Winemaker Jeff Proch remains unfazed, accepting that "you can’t control Mother Nature."

Located on a hillside of Tussey Mountain, the winery’s two acres of vines stretch between the road and the winery building. Despite its less-than-ideal growing conditions, its accessibility and visibility draw in passers-by, providing guests with stunning sunset views.

Jeff Proch, son of local residents Jinx and Natalie Proch, has been shaped by his family’s history in winemaking. His father worked at Mount Nittany Winery for several years, where Jeff first recognized the potential of vineyards. After a stint in New York City working in financial services, Jeff returned to Central Pennsylvania in 2009, aspiring to carve out a niche in the wine industry.

In 2011, with the support of the Carrols, Jeff established University Wine Company, starting with wines crafted in his parents’ garage. The signature U-Freeze Wine Slush quickly became popular at outdoor festivals, paving the way for future successes.

By 2013, the winery expanded to bottled wines and opened a branch at The Greek restaurant in State College. The family soon acquired a property, eventually planting a vineyard at Misty Hill Drive. They built the winery in 2019, starting with six grape varieties, some of which struggled to adapt to the location. However, they discovered success with the Marquette and Traminette varieties.

The pandemic struck just as they were set to open in 2020, but they persevered, getting through with outdoor seating and a primarily family-operated staff. They now produce a diverse range of wines, often sourcing grapes from various vineyards while maintaining production in-house.

With growth in production and a loyal customer base, Jeff recently introduced canned beverages like Home Team Raspberry Hard Seltzer and hard cider for outdoor events. The winery also serves as a vibrant community hub with weekly activities like trivia nights, live music, and food truck events.

Today, the University Wine Company stands as a testament to a family’s dream turned reality—promising excellent wine and a warm, welcoming atmosphere against the backdrop of Central PA’s charm.
